The Engineer's Dictionary

  • Major Technological Breakthrough -- it works OK, but looks very hi-tech.
  • Developed after years of intensive research -- it was discovered by accident.
  • Project slightly behind original schedule due to unforseen difficulties -- we are working on something else.
  • The designs are well within allowable limits -- we just made it, stretching a point or two.
  • Customer satisfaction is believed assured -- we are so far behind schedule that the customer was happy to get anything at all from us.
  • A number of different approaches are being tried -- we are still pissing in the wind.
  • Extensive effort is being applied on a fresh approach to the problem -- we just hired three new guys; we'll let them kick it around for a while.
  • The entire concept will have to be abandoned -- the only guy who understood the thing quit.
  • Test results were extremely gratifying -- it works, and are we surprised!
  • Close project coordination -- we know whom to blame.
  • Preliminary operational tests were inconclusive -- the darn thing blew up when we threw the switch.
  • We will look into it -- forget it! we have enough problems for now.
  • Please note and initial -- let's spread the responsibility for the screw up.
  • Give us the benefit of your thinking -- we'll listen to what you have to say as long as it doesn't interfere with what we've already done.
  • Give us your interpretation -- I can't wait to hear this bull!
  • ALL NEW -- parts not interchangeable with the previous design.
  • Rugged -- too damn heavy to lift!
  • Lightweight -- lighter than rugged.
  • Years of development -- one finally worked.
  • Energy saving -- achieved when the power switch is off.
  • Low maintenance -- impossible to fix if broken.

    Research Definitions

  • "It has long been known..." -- I haven't bothered to look up the original reference.
  • "Of great theoretical and practical importance" -- interesting to me.
  • "While it was not been possible to provide definite answers to these questions..." -- the experiments didn't work out, but I figured I could get publicity out of it.
  • "Extremely high purity, superpurity" -- composition unknown except for the exaggerated claims of the supplier.
  • "Three of the samples were chosen for detailed study" -- the results on the others didn't make sense and were ignored.
  • "Accidentally stained during mounting" -- accidental dropped on the floor.
  • "Handled with extreme care during the experiments" -- not dropped on the floor.
  • "Typical results are shown" -- the best results are shown.
  • "Presumably at longer times ..." -- I didn't take the time to find out.
  • "These results will be reported at a later date" -- I might get around to this sometime.
  • "The most reliable values are those of Jones" -- he was a student of mine.
  • "It is believed that..." -- I think.
  • "It is generally believed that..." -- a couple of other guys think so too.
  • "It might be argued that..." -- I have such a good answer for this objection that I shall raise it.
  • "It is clear that much additional work will be required before a complete understanding..." -- I don't understand it.
  • "Correct within an order of magnitude" -- wrong!
  • "It is to be hoped that this work will stimulate further work in the field" -- this paper is not very good, but neither are any of the others on this miserable subject.
  • "Thanks are due to Joe Glotz for assistance with the experiment and to John Doe for valuable discussions" -- Glotz did the work and Doe explained to me what it meant.
