The Road to Paris![]() Entertainers are clowning around making the wall. |
The first game was a pick-up game. I went there with no cleats nor shin-guards. When we were forming teams, this woman asked me what position I play. "Position?" I didn't know there were positions. So I was assigned right fullback. Throughout the game, she kept on yelling at me. I was either too far ahead or too far back. Later, it started to rain. I was ready to leave the
field on the very first drop. "But wait, everybody is still playing!" It seems nobody even noticed it was raining. "I guess I'll have to
stay too", even though I was completely useless. It rained harder -- still playing. "When would these people stop?" Lightening. Aha! People started to leave the field. "Finally!" I was completely clueless.
After the season was over, I bought a book. Read and learned in the Winter. By the second season, soccer is in my blood. Now a days, I wouldn't hesitate to play in a muddy field with 50 degree chilling down-pour.
It's soccer weather as long as there is no thunder and lightening.
I didn't go to any of the 1994 World Cup games when it was held here in the US. Before the 94 World Cup, there was no soccer on TV to speak of. Since I haven't watch much soccer, I just didn't catch on that it is a spectator sport. Until 1996 the Major League Soccer was formed and we have a team here in town, the Columbus Crew. I have been a season ticket holder ever since. Watch every home game and listen to discussions on the mailing list. At first, I didn't understand what "creativity" people were talking about. As I see more games, I started to appreciate the moves and the passes. In '94, even though I have been involved with the sport for 5 years, I was still seeing the ball bouncing back and forth just like any other amateur. Now, I can see the good passes and the bad ones. As my level of appreciation rises, the enjoyment of watching the game is also more heightened.
When I hear people talking about the game atmosphere in other countries, I decided I have to experience the World Cup before I die. The combination of World Cup and Paris is just too good to pass up. On to Paris!
